SUMMARY:January Vegan Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:January’s book is How to Create a Vegan World: A Pragmatic Approach by Tobias Leenaert. Everyone is welcome! All you have to do is read the book and show up to discuss over dinner. \nLocation to be determined soon. Suggestions are welcome! \nSummary: In this thought-provoking book\, Tobias Leenaert leaves well-trodden animal advocacy paths and takes a fresh look at the strategies\, objectives\, and communication of the vegan and animal rights movement. He argues that\, given our present situation\, with entire societies dependent on using animals\, we need a very pragmatic approach. How to Create a Vegan World contains many valuable ideas and insights for both budding advocates for animals and seasoned activists\, organizational leaders\, and even entrepreneurs.

SUMMARY:June Vegan Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our book for the June meeting is Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are? by Frans de Waal. This book has wonderful reviews. It is available in paperback\, Kindle and Audible. \nEveryone is welcome to attend! We will choose the next book\, date and meeting place together at this meeting. \nSummary : What separates your mind from an animal’s? Maybe you think it’s your ability to design tools\, your sense of self\, or your grasp of past and future–all traits that have helped us define ourselves as the planet’s preeminent species. But in recent decades\, these claims have eroded\, or even been disproven outright\, by a revolution in the study of animal cognition. Take the way octopuses use coconut shells as tools; elephants that classify humans by age\, gender\, and language; or Ayumu\, the young male chimpanzee at Kyoto University whose flash memory puts that of humans to shame. Based on research involving crows\, dolphins\, parrots\, sheep\, wasps\, bats\, whales\, and of course chimpanzees and bonobos\, Frans de Waal explores both the scope and the depth of animal intelligence. He offers a firsthand account of how science has stood traditional behaviorism on its head by revealing how smart animals really are\, and how we’ve underestimated their abilities for too long. \nTo purchase:\nhttp://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/are-we-smart-enough-to-know-how-smart-animals-are-frans-de-waal/1122688103

SUMMARY:November Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The book we are reading for this meeting is Peter Singer’s brand new book “Ethics in the Real World: 82 Brief Essays on Things That Matter”. Location will be Leg Up Farm Market in North York in their event space. \nSynopsis: In this book of brief essays\, he applies his controversial ways of thinking to issues like climate change\, extreme poverty\, animals\, abortion\, euthanasia\, human genetic selection\, sports doping\, the sale of kidneys\, the ethics of high-priced art\, and ways of increasing happiness. Singer asks whether chimpanzees are people\, smoking should be outlawed\, or consensual sex between adult siblings should be decriminalized\, and he reiterates his case against the idea that all human life is sacred\, applying his arguments to some recent cases in the news. In addition\, he explores\, in an easily accessible form\, some of the deepest philosophical questions\, such as whether anything really matters and what is the value of the pale blue dot that is our planet. The collection also includes some more personal reflections\, like Singer’s thoughts on one of his favorite activities\, surfing\, and an unusual suggestion for starting a family conversation over a holiday feast. \nProvocative and original\, these essays will challenge—and possibly change—your beliefs about a wide range of real-world ethical questions. \nhttp://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/ethics-in-the-real-world-peter-singer/1123485864?ean=9780691172477 \n*This is the last book of the year – at the final meeting of 2016 we will be viewing a film at a small cinema.*
